Prof. Nicolas Markwald

Nicolas Markwald is Professor of Communication Design at the Rhine-Waal International University of Applied Sciences. After studying communication design at the University of Wuppertal, he worked as an art director and later as a creative director in renowned design offices in Hamburg, Berlin and Frankfurt - focussing on brand development, branding and digital communication.

He specialises in strategic communications consulting for companies, industry and cultural institutions. For many years, he was a partner and managing partner of the successful design agency Markwald Neusitzer Identity with offices in Frankfurt am Main and Düsseldorf. The work has been honoured with over a hundred national and international design awards.

He is a member of the German Design Club (DDC), whose board he chaired and conceptually shaped for several years. He is also a member of the board of trustees of the World Design Capital Frankfurt am Main 2026.
